All the ups and downs in one continuous clip.

Something I did not realize until I began to undertake the work of analyzing One In A Million is just how much easier it is to digest the film when you consider Shane and Oliver's disastrous dinner in one continuous block.

So I did you---and myself---the favor of re-cutting the scenes together, incorporating the end of From The Heart to create an uninterrupted set of scenes, hoping to place everything that happened in context. Grab a Yoo Hoo and some popcorn, you're going to need at least 20 minutes!

After hearing from Martha how we came to spend so much time at Montaldo's, the sudden shift in the dynamic between Shane and Oliver feels less abrupt, especially when we remember that Shane and Oliver's rhythm was already off throughout From The Heart---One In A Million was merely a continuation.

While they had the courage to address their miscommunication, they struggled profoundly when matters turned to the state and desires of their hearts. Cutting the video together reveals this picture seamlessly.

Their dancing reveals so much of where they're at in their relationship. I think that's the most visible sign for me. When they danced in the DLO, it was like their defenses were down and they just let themselves feel. Those defenses were back up at this point.

I think the app I used might limit the number of times it can be watched. I could not upload video to YouTube due to copyright issues, but it appears this solution might not work, either! Working on it!

What a great experience seeing the whole “date” strung together in one stream. Oliver tried so hard to get himself back on track several times but when Shane’s responses didn’t lead the conversation in a comfortable direction for him (which was often, because she was clearly ready for some validation that their relationship was leading to more intimacy and irritated that it was not occurring) he started “thinking” too much and the communication faltered. Did anyone notice how effectively the scene was shot after Oliver spoke to Ramon and listened to his words “Stop thinking, be bold, face the music.” Oliver sighed, strode into the entrance way which was illuminated by the spotlight from the performance, paused as Nikki sang the words “Why should I rush to prove that I can break my heart all over”, and yet, despite the fact that he feared that going back in might lead to another broken heart, he continued to return boldly to the table. The conversation was still awkward but that discussion about dance lessons might have gone somewhere had the romantic dance performance by Michael and Sofia not stirred up emotions Oliver wanted to address (shown by his obvious attempt to touch Shane’s hand) but hadn’t quite prepared for. Remember how we said that dialogue in From the Heart showed that Shane wanted a guy “to tell her that he couldn’t live without her” and Oliver wanted “a quiet dinner, conversation, and a dance”. This lovely capture of the whole “date” demonstrated their different expectations so well. Now that Oliver has realized what he might lose if he stalls much longer, their next date should be more honest and fulfilling for both of them.

That was wonderful. I think Oliver was a little put out when Shane answered the question about allergies and the joke he made, but looked over it, giving him points.
Now Ramone, puts me in mind of Jordan. He seems to always have a way to put them back on track. However he is a bit awkward. Could he be an Angel in training, like Clarence in " It's a Wonderful Life"?

I sometimes have trouble making sense of stories that have a lot of flash-backs. This video made the whole activity clear for me. I loved it. Thanks so much, Chandel.

Thanks so much for making this Montaldo's date video. I loved how the original episode was shot in flashbacks, but it's great getting to see "the date" (or whatever it was) play out in real time. I am sure this took a lot of effort and it's really appreciated!

You have every reason to be a proud editor. This is amazingly well done. Thank you. What stood out to me is how consistently and unwaveringly Shane reassures, validates Oliver's place in her life. I counted at least 11 responses. From the beginning when he talks about the poorly cut heart on his Valentine, she responds with "it was perfect" to the final sincere, almost pleading "I only dance with you," Shane stays the course. It reminded me of I Cor. 13: 7, "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Thanks again. You could write a blog on all the ways she says I love you without saying I love you just at this dinner. :) Thank you again for your hard work.

My heart sings as I watch this tremendous video over and over ... So many nuances, so many subtleties, such utterly sweet frustrations as we watch these two so desperately try to connect in a deeper way than.either are sure they bring themselves to do. Thank you so much for your editing expertise and your thoughtfulness in doing this for all of who simply cannot get enough of this delightful series!

Thank you!!! This is truly a masterpiece. I enjoyed every second of it. I am in awe, once again, of the writing in this show. I put myself in Shane's place and wondered how I would survive a "date" like that. Clearly she did much better than I would have done. I get frustrated way to easy. I am happy that Oliver, by the end of the last song, was willing to hold Shane's hand, or at the very least, touch it. I wonder what would have happened had he succeeded in doing that. I was so happy to hear them talking about more dance lessons! I hope that is in future episodes. They make the cutest couple on earth. Heartwarming and gut wrenching but oh, so cute! We are all cheering them on! I am looking forward to "Lost Without You." The title alone says so much.

I wanted to take a page out of Gibbs' play book, (NCIS) and slap Oliver on the back of the head. That was one of the most painful scenes I remember watching.

Loved this! Thank you so much! I just discovered this site and I have obviously watched this clip a few times because I just heard my 2 yr old singing "you want to be my friend? You want to be my fri-end?" to his toys. Lol! Starting them young!

Thank you for the video. I enjoyed being able to watch it altogether. So many points already stated from dancing being off and defenses being up are my same sentiments.
