From finding her voice at the local branch competition to achieving the Miss Colorado Special Delivery title, Rita evolved into a confident and vibrant woman whose kind and compassionate heart led her to return all the love and support given her to someone who really needed it, and at just the right time!
The Return Of Renita
One of the things I found most intriguing about Truth Be Told and Impossible Dream is the return of Renita Hayweather: Frontier Duchess. A combination of Rita's heart, and the exciting future she envisioned for herself through a historical lens, it became many things depending on who referenced it. Since the early days, it has acted as a source of inspiration and motivation for Rita, so it's no wonder she sought to use it as part of her talent at the National Pageant, especially given the Pageant's theme, "Delivering Inspiration." Rita's decision to begin her pageant journey was inspired by Renita's brave journey to new and uncharted territory, not unlike that which Rita traversed to make it all the way to D.C.! |
I think we get a sense of this both with her intent to use it as part of her talent during competition, as well as when she suddenly draws the parallel between Mr. D'Lorman giving Renita his most trusty steed because he was in love with her, and what Norman tried to do for her by getting a chapter of her book published. In addition to Norman's declaration of love, I think Rita realizes she truly has written the story of the life she dreamed of through Renita.
What about Rita's decision to finally allow Norman to read Renita Hayweather when he asked in the first place? If we accept that Renita Hayweather is a complete dissertation of Rita's heart, then she was figuratively entrusting to Norman what she had literally already given---her heart. Furthermore, she had the complete confidence to do both things. This is light-years away from where even I thought her capable only a year ago.
Special Handling
Much as the title suggests, Rita engaged in quite a bit of special handling in Impossible Dream, both as a cheerleader for co-contestant Mindy Maloney, and handling the revelation that Norman had gotten her talent disqualified only moments before she was to perform. I found Rita's gracious and compassionate approach to both situations to be absolutely refreshing. It was one thing to support Mindy as a co-contestant when they were both on equal footing, shared the same dream, and were ready to compete. It became quite another to find herself disqualified, dream denied, and doing everything to save the seemingly fleeting chances of that same co-contestant, now friend. It was an act of selflessness not often found in the real world, and one which instilled in me a new appreciation for Rita overall. |
But perhaps the most important handling Rita engaged in was with Norman, with whom Rita reaffirmed her belief that winning wasn't everything, easily forgiving him. It was obvious from her reaction on the stage that the revelation that Norman was in love with her carried more weight than even winning the title every could have. And she made sure Norman knew it with that kiss!
