But color me suspicious when a few of those past discussions or their subject seemed to find themselves layered into One In A Million. Now, I could very well be paranoid, or so engrossed in all things SSD that what I thought was a subtle shout-out was really just a product of her brilliant mind meant only to further the important work of this film. But Martha did mention in the One In A Million press release that "[t]he next three movies are written especially for [us] loyal fans," and what better way to do that than to throw in easter eggs identified through covert social research.
Here are a few things seemingly woven in just for us:
Eleanor, From Passports
In the meantime, the POstables Twitter and Facebook communities have often joked about Eleanor's identity, making emphasis on her as of late particularly interesting.
Ramon
POstables tend to go crazy at the prospect of Ramon rejoining our favorite four, usually with a new job description. It appears Ramon is now the face of the Mega Power Sweepstakes in addition to being a correspondent and weatherman at KBC.
Though a brief encounter, he managed to not only provide some laughs, but impart on Oliver some sage advice. Ramon's appearance not only fulfilled our outspoken desire to have him back, but also suggests that Martha not only knows of our love for him, but can use even his few minutes to make connections and make us think! |
Lyrics Discussion
When we discussed "The Water Is Wide" after its use in From The Heart, one of the first things I discovered was Oliver's modification of the lyrics, which Shane called him on in One In A Million. Interesting this small---but extremely important--detail made it's way in!

Near Miss
While we'll be taking a considerable amount of time to discuss the scene further in the coming days, that ShOliver almost-kiss served several functions, not the least of which was a nice compromise between those eager for Shane and Oliver to seal the deal, and those of us still wanting a bit more development before the big moment occurs.
No doubt Martha has watched our debate and made a conscious and clever compromise on our behalf, while still accomplishing her storytelling needs. |
The Right Oven
It happens almost every time we watch The Treasure Box or From Paris With Love, but the discussion always inevitably occurs among the single ladies, particularly on Twitter, about waiting for one's Norman or Oliver. So my ears immediately perked up at the oven and baking analogy---especially from Rita, who struggles in the kitchen more generally!
The words of encouragement are clear and specific, and you can't help but get the feeling that they're words Martha may very well have used to encourage a close friend in a time of need, perhaps on more than one occasion. At the same time, I couldn't help but get the feeling she was speaking to us, too. |
The Only Men In Denver

|
Martha had some pretty nice things to day about the team's legendary (now retired) quarterback Peyton Manning as well.
So I found it really interesting that not only did One In A Million take place in February, but that a team vaguely resembling an NFL team appeared to be playing on television at the Mailbox Grille during that hilarious discussion between Lester and Norman. A little shout-out based on that conversation, perhaps? |
Only a few days in and I am having a field day with One In A Million. Keep coming back for more, POstables!
Convinced,
