I probably sound crazy to you right now. That’s okay---I thought it sounded pretty crazy myself when the thought first crossed my mind. But once I sat with it a second, it’s stopped seeming so crazy, and started feeling pretty brilliant on Martha’s part to write herself in.
Watch this video I made for you:
House Rules from Chandel Charles on Vimeo.
Remember that Theresa is the first Supervisor the Postables have in the regular series. She’s the first to observe these four diverse people navigating this new space they’ve created for themselves of “pushing the envelope” and going the extra mile to make sure every letter gets where it needs to be. Theresa has the first chance to spot potential problems and areas for growth. Who knows those spots better than Martha?
Martha, through Theresa, tells the Postables about themselves--- like telling Rita she’s a beautiful onion waiting to be peeled. She tells Oliver about his grandfather, whom he barely knew but loved dearly, about that harrowing tale of sacrifice, grit and midwifery. She encourages and reminds them that “No postal worker stands taller than when he stoops to deliver to the least of these,” an apropos paraphrase of Matthew 24:45.
At the very end of “To Whom It May Concern,” Theresa (Martha) dispatches her final assessments of the Postables, seen above.
By taking on this new method of delivering letters, the Postables have opened themselves up to more than just the fresh air. They are signing on to tackle life in all its beauty and complexity through the letters they deliver, and, as we see throughout the series, inevitably exposing themselves to the potential of seeing the beauty and complexity of their lives reflected back to them. They could not have known it at the time, but the messages Theresa leaves them with are the perspectives through which each Postable will process their experiences moving forward, and, when truly embraced, will allow them to become who they were meant to be. Who would be more desirous of setting them off on the right path than Martha? |
Potential conspiracy theory aside, a question remains: Have the Postables lived up to the “House Rules?”
What a great question! Lucky for you, that’s what I’ll be covering all this week on the blog. I’ll cover the hits, misses, and which Postable's greatest challenge may still lay ahead.
Bet that got you thinking, didn’t it?
See you tomorrow!
