From The [Start], An Unexpected Retrospective - Part II

The uncanny connections continue.

Yesterday I made crazy connections between From The Heart and every Signed, Sealed, Delivered episode from the Pilot through The Future Me. Today, I extend the line all the way through Impossible Dream!

Something Good

In addition to Serge resurfacing, it appears Oliver's sense of humor has improved since this episode, culminating in From The Heart through his clever presentation of Dale's true identity, which caused Shane to punch him in the arm!

Dark of Night

Both this episode and From The Heart share letters over a decade old with potentially life-changing legal implications depending on the course of action. Did I mention they were also both read over breakfast?

The Treasure Box

Love letters from a previous century are not a new thing in the SSD realm, those in the Treasure Box were from 1908. This latest letter, however, pushes the boundaries of time back to 1835.

A Hope & A Future

Maybe you caught it, maybe you didn't--- but Oliver's church is the same one at which Joshua was left in the opening scene of the series finale.

For Christmas

Shane's blatant aversion to the approaching holiday in both this film and From The Heart are the most obvious connection. What's less obvious is how Shane ultimately receives the gift she didn't think possible, courtesy of Oliver in both cases.

From Paris With Love

In From The Heart, Shane finally clears up the status of Oliver's divorce that resulted from Holly and Oliver's interaction in From Paris With Love.

In case you missed it: Oliver is, in fact, divorced now.

Truth Be Told

Family history was everything to Oliver--- at least until the concept got flipped on its head in Truth Be Told. Nevertheless, Oliver apparently occupies not only an historical landmark, but one previously occupied by another O'Toole.

Impossible Dream

Perhaps the most outright callback of the film, Rita's meteoric rise to Miss Special Delivery truly began in this immediate successor to From The Heart.

And there you have it, POstables---one connection for every film or episode in the SSD canon! But don't worry, I didn't divulge ALL of them. You have to have something to do in your free time, right?

Had an absolutely oh my gosh mindblowing sort of moment this morning.

FPWL:
Oliver to Shane: "It just takes time...to see if we have the right chemistry - to work together."

TBT:
Shane: "We work together."
Hazel: "You sure do."

FTH:
Rita: "You and Oliver have a thing. I can read the chemistry."

Pretty cool right?!? Ok...I'm done now. lol

Sooo, I just had a remarkable and significant realization as I was reviewing the music of SSD. The first song Oliver and Shane danced to was "Moon River" -- "wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style some day." The crossing the river theme was obviously continued in FTH with the two of them dancing to "The Water is Wide" -- "I cannot cross o'er and neither have I wings to fly." I noticed right away the change in the end lyric when Oliver recited it, but just noticed that he also changed the original "Give me a boat that will carry two" to " Give us a boat..." It seems a much more definite statement indicating that the "some day" crossing of that river together has an intentional focus and plan at this point. Love it! Martha Williamson is a genius! :)

I noticed that in the last scene Shane was wearing the necklace that she lost in the Christmas movie and later Oliver found to give back to her. Has that necklace surfaced in other movies that I have missed?

That necklace is Shane's signature wardrobe piece that she has been wearing from day 1! :)

Yes, I watched the pilot movie today and noticed she was wearing the necklace. I'm sure there are other scenes in which she is wearing it . Thank you for helping us enjoy all the aspects of SSD. There is so much to learn from them. I especially love the looks they give each other from time to time. You know exactly what they are thinking OR you are wondering what they are thinking. :)

The Church: omgosh. Did not notice that.

Soul Mates: I did notice something at the beginning that I find interesting. It is the sign above the entrance to the ranch, the six pointed star worked into the design. A bit later reference is made to Star Lily. Because I love research that relates to scripture, I heard an immediate mental “click”.
Christian legend says that the angel Gabriel was holding a lily went to Mary to make that world changing announcement that a virgin would become pregnant. A few months later, Gabriel’s lily would become the star of Bethlehem. That is why the Star Lily is also known as the Lily of Bethlehem or the Madonna Lily.
Shane and Oliver have embraced three times. When you embrace someone, the lines from your elbows to finger tips form a triangle. The mirror of that is the person embracing you. Two triangles together form the Star Lily. For some*, the Star Lily is the adopted symbol of soulmates.
Which brings me to From the Heart. First, the valentine is also triangle, but there was no "star lily" because Shane did not give one to Oliver.
Scripture reference in Soul Mates is “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Following a few lines later is, “a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Soul Mates was the episode where Oliver and Shane started dance lessons. Between then and From the Heart, Oliver and Shane both mourned. Now they dance.

*Reading this again, I can see where I might be obsessing. Time for a Yoo-Hoo and a time out. Where’s my corner?

I have no flashes of remarkable insight like the eloquent contributors so far--just a few retrospectives:

1) When Shane met Oliver after choir practice, she told Dale she had heard him sing. That song occurred in FPWL when Oliver sang her the first verse of "Springtime in the Rockies".
2) Oliver opened Ryan,s letter with a blade from a pocket knife. He did the same with Melissa's letter in "Dark of Night".
3) In FTH the debate competitions are at the Brown Palace Hotel. This location is also used in both "Treasure Chest" and FPWL.
4) In "For Christmas" Rita makes terrible cookies and when she suggests making Valentine's dinner, Norman seems to steer her away from that idea. Is he afraid of what might result if she cooked?
5) Shane gets a letter from her mom and an interested man in both FTH and TBT.
6) we heard again about Eleanor in Passports in FTH. Previously we heard of Eleanor in an early episode.
7) Norman's perceptive advice to the Governor in FTH is reminiscent of his insistence to the Senate Subcommitee that they could not delay in sending help for Lt. Amid on in TBT and his sensitivity in supporting Phoebe.
That's all -- love finding connections in SSD.

Flashback from FPWL: Did anyone notice Oliver drinking a "nice red" on Valentine's when he was not out with Shane?

Noticed that his pocket squares were off, uneasiness between them, but think his ties matched her outfits. Also he had his layers on again, as you have said protecting himself. Only time he has his jacket`s off is in the café, and when he`s in the DLO with Shane, and Norman . Jacket off at café , I think because this was like the DLO to him 15 years ago.
The dance sequence was a mirror to Christmas. Shane had on a red dress at Christmas, and a fuchsia one in FTH. Oliver is in a tux at Christmas, and has a black suit and black tie in FTH. At Christmas Shane is explaining who Jordan is, and in FTH Oliver is explaining who Dale is, and Oliver stops the dance at Christmas, and Shane stops the dance in FTH.
Also in a Hope and a promise Oliver , and Shane were having a conversation about the letter, and it was interrupted by the twins Mother. In FTH they are having a conversation about what Oliver had done on Valentine`s night , and it was interrupted by the Governor.
