"With God and USPS, nothing is impossible, Norman."
Oliver may have uttered this line offhand in Truth Be Told, but little did he know how prophetic these words would be. Through a series of tiny miracles that added up, the Postables made the impossible a reality! The quest capped of a year of incredible performances for our cast, and brought on board a bevy of guest stars past and present to make it literally the best installment yet! The Impossible Dream takes place in July, almost two months after the events of Truth Be Told. This film finds the Postables traveling to Washington, D.C. to support Rita as she competes for the National Miss Special Delivery title. But through a series of unexpected events, the Postables end up seeking to finish the work they started only a few months before, bringing home Lt. Randilynn Amidon, who they discover is still alive and plotting a harrowing escape to get home to her daughter, Phoebe. As we saw, this journey is packed with some new and even some familiar faces. It all started with Ramon (Zak Santiago) interviewing Rita before the Postables left Denver. A chance encounter in their D.C. hotel lobby reintroduces us to Phoebe Amidon (Megan Charpentier) and her grandfather Harper (William B. Davis), who have traveled to the nation's capital for more answers about Randilynn and her mission. Shane, still a little raw from the discovery that her childhood home has been torn down [stay tuned to the blog this week for more on this], reaches out to her ex, Steve Marek (Mark Valley) in hopes his position with the NSA could help get Phoebe and Harper the answers they need. Of course, Steve's involvement with the Postables poses a unique challenge for Oliver, who isn't quite sure what to do. Eric and Mark play the tension between them exceptionally well, and I don't think there was a woman in America who didn't want to swoop in and take on Shane's rejected suitor. Hey, it might have been love, but it's no porch swing! |
Meanwhile, Norman is struggling with the possibility of Rita winning the National pageant and jet-setting across the world for a year. In an attempt to show Rita how much she means to him, he submits a chapter of her unpublished novel, Renita Hayweather: Frontier Duchess to Postal Living Quarterly, unexpectedly getting her talent for the pageant disqualified.
While any number of responses would have been acceptable in this instance, Rita chooses instead to focus her energy on helping another contestant achieve the dream Rita's disqualified talent denied her. And Mindy Maloney (Christina Bianco) belts out an incredible rendition of "Impossible Dream" to clench the national title. Rita's selflessness and bubbly personality win her the Special Handling title, the postal equivalent of Miss Congeniality. |
Of course, the mission of bringing Randilynn home is truly what drives a majority of the films' action, as this installment utilized a unique look-back format that had us in the Senate hearing room one minute and watching the Postables testimony play out and through their impassioned pleas for action to be taken on the decoded clues of a letter Randilynn sent to set her rescue in motion. Ultimately, as we saw, their gamble paid off, and Randilynn Amidon was reunited with her family.
All of this transpired in 90 minutes, reminding us that not only is Martha #BossGoals, she truly is televisions most talented showrunner and writer. And not only that, she has recruited the best actors to play these stories out. |
First, all of the Yoo-Hoo to Tammy Gillis, who truly did justice to the strength and courage of those serving in our armed forces. From the sacrifices made to protect the freedom we so often take for granted, to their determination to make it home to those for whom they fight. I am grateful and humbled by the reminder.
To Megan Charpentier, thank you for reminding us through Phoebe of the audacity of hope, even when everything around us says to give up. It was incredible to watch you keep the faith through both Truth Be Told and Impossible Dream. |
Eric, Kristin, Crystal and Geoff: My, have you mastered the art of the ensemble cast. No question, both in that hearing room and on that tarmac, that the four of you had a current of connection running through you and your characters. When one of you is distressed, all of you are. When one of you is joyous, all of you are. And it's incredible that your audience feels every bit of it. You are everything a person could have asked for in a cast---there really is no other way to say it. We're so blessed to get four more chances to watch you work through the lives of your characters in 2016!
As for your individual characters---the growth this year has been incredible. Just when you think you knew everything there was to know, we learn something more that changes everything and we loved every second of it! |
Once again: Thank you all for your incredible performances, sharing your hearts and your humanity with us to bring this story to life. From the bottom of our hearts, we're grateful.
Believing The Impossible,
~C
