Three Weeks Prior...
Rachel packed up her son Danny and headed towards Canon City for the purpose of starting a new life, which was supposed to start with a visit to Danny's father, Jack, in the Canon City Correctional Facility. They stopped at the Hotel Mesa Pueblo for a night where Danny snuck away from his mother and acquired a camera, which he used to take photos of the places they stopped along the way. Throughout the course of their trip, Rachel lost her wallet at a fruit stand called Melvin's Melons, and couldn't pay at their next stop, Minnie's Country Diner. Seeing her distress, and that she was out of money, Minnie sent her to Karl to stay at the Summit Place Hotel. Frustrated with still not seeing his father, Danny wrote an urgent-sounding note and mailed the camera asking his dad to find him instead. |
Three Weeks Later: Day 1
During their encounter with Hazel, Rita, still only engaged for four weeks, was presented with the reality of everything still left to do in preparation for her upcoming nuptials. Clearly overwhelmed, Shane ushered her away and prevented anyone, including Oliver, from bringing them up again. To redirect Oliver's attention, she presented him the camera, which set them off on this latest postal mystery.
Oliver, Shane, Rita and Norman attempt to discern the origins of the camera, as well as develop any potential photos. One photo led them to believe a distress note was written by a child who may have been kidnapped. Following up on a clue in one of the photos, Rita discovered the camera was part of an '80's party held at a hotel only three weeks prior. To learn more, Oliver requested to engage Norman and Rita's recreational vehicle to take their case on the road. |
Day 2
With Oliver at the helm, the POstables headed out on the open road in search of their missing little boy and arrived at the Hotel Mesa Pueblo, where they met with Sylvia, a hotel employee who remembered the party and identified the individuals seen in the developed photos as Joann and Becca from the hotel's accounting firm.
Carr, Carr & Kaplan
Following up, the POstables met with Joann and Becca, and while they didn't remember seeing any children, Joann's husband recorded the event. While reviewing footage, Shane spotted the little boy and his backpack in the background.
Hotel Mesa Pueblo The group returned to the hotel to ask concierge, Doug, more questions to ascertain more information, and with it more leads, regarding their little boy. Though hesitant at first, their gift of tissues and impressing upon him the urgency of the situation, Doug became as asset. He remembered not only the woman, Rachel, and child, but also the dinosaur the little boy left behind, which he gave to the POstables. Linking Doug's tidbits with the photos they developed, the POstables determined that Rachel and the little boy were headed towards Canon City via US 50 West and took their adventure in the same direction. |
Road Stop & Camp Ground Hungry, the POstables stopped off to buy sandwich supplies. While Shane was in the store with Rita, Oliver happened upon Shane's phone and another text from Alex Brighton, which clearly unsettled him. Further down the road at the camp ground, Shane continued to reassess the situation in an attempt to ascertain a lead, but had a reflective moment instead that caught the attention of a very troubled and distracted Oliver. |
Still at the picnic table, the incessant ding of her phone prompted Shane to ponder aloud the benefits of being technology free, a path of thought which led to the revelation that perhaps Rachel drove past Canon City, explaining why more pictures were "still ahead of [them]."
Breakdown On the road, the Starcruiser overheated, causing a temporary stall during which Shane and Oliver also experienced a 'temporary failure to restart" and Rita questioned her compatibility with Norman. Shane convinced Rita that she and Norman are a perfect match. Norman revealed to Oliver that he can't drive. After each the men and women had a chance to talk among themselves, Norman declared the Starcruiser ready to continue the journey. Norman told Rita that they needed to talk about something, but not right that moment. Shane and Oliver reconciled, but before Oliver had a chance to explain why he overheated, they happened upon the fruit stand from the photos. |
The POstables stopped at the roadside stand and chatted with the man behind the counter, who remembered the woman and the little boy, even the fact the little boy called her "mommy." When presented with the next photo, the clerk identified it as Minnie's Diner, which subsequently became their next stop.
Minnie's Country Diner
At the diner, the POstables identified the exact table from which one of their last developed photos was taken. The waitress who greeted them withheld what she knew about Rachel and her son, and instead pointed the POstables in the direction of the Dinosaur monument. Tired, and deciding there is a good chance the pair is long gone by now, they retired to Summits Point Lodge with the intent to return to Denver the following day.
Summits Place Motel Before retiring for the evening, each couple shared a moment. Norman revealed to Rita that his response to the topic of children was about much more than it appeared, revealing not only his desire to adopt, but the pain he had been harboring from being bullied as child. His vulnerability allowed Rita to love his concerns away and for the to continue planning their wedding and grow closer. |
Clearly unable to sleep, Oliver sat with the dinosaur and pondered to whom it belongs, and perhaps to whom he belonged, too.
Day 3
Minnie's Country Diner
Increasingly suspicious, the POstables, realizing that Rachel and her son must still be around, decided to return to the diner, where they eventually confirmed their suspicions. They final caught up with Rachel and her son, and were even able to return his beloved "Bertie."
While Rita and Norman entertained Danny and had some pie, Shane and Oliver discovered the true story behind Danny's letter and the circumstances that led to their road trip. Empathizing with Rachel's struggle to forgive and increasingly feeling the weight of her own secret, Shane shared about her sister, whose gambling problem left them estranged. She made a deal with Rachel to connect with her sister if Rachel would reach out to her incarcerated husband. In light of the revelation of Shane having a sister, she and Oliver had a heart-to-heart outside the diner where Shane expressed her hurt and anger, and Oliver offered his support, and encouraged her to forgive. |
Later That Week
Oliver nearby, Shane makes the call to reconnect with her sister, resulting in a sweet moment between the two as Oliver insisted Shane inform her sister of her "boyfriend."
Later that evening, Rita, Norman, Shane and Oliver meet at Ramon's Bistro, where the soon-to-be married couple invites Shane and Oliver to be their Maid of Honor and Best Man, respectively.
Straightened Out,
