...and our discussion earlier this week about Papa O'Toole's date card, it wasn't long before I started thinking about the potential content of SSD8 & 9 and what it might be cool to see. I thought I would share some thoughts with you all, and at the same time launch the new "SSD8 & 9" category that will serve as your info hub when filming actually begins!
Travel Plans
I don't know about you, but I'm dying to see these guys cross state lines---together. Misdirected mail from the "western and mid-states regions" is routed through the Denver DLO as of the Pilot, and as of Dark of Night, they have "wide powers of postal discretion" that, while they've been utilized often and even on weekends, still hasn't found itself delivering a letter that originates and is destined for locations outside the Denver metro area. Perhaps it's a jurisdiction thing and it's policy to re-route outgoing lost letters to their destinations (kind of like the letter that smelled of Florida yew in One In A Million, subsequently forwarded without reading to the Miami branch---Florida certainly isn't "western" and more than likely not considered a "mid-state"). But it just seems to me that they need to push the regional boundaries and flex their previously granted jurisdiction beyond neighboring states like New Mexico, and head to California or back east towards Ohio (it is "the heart of it all" you know...). It would just be nice to see them start and complete a letter mysteries somewhere else.
Meet The Parents

Norman & Rita
Now that the happy couple is finally engaged, it won't be long before they start planning the wedding. Granted, engagement is a relationship season all its own, but when you marry a person you also marry their family, and both seem to have rather colorful ones. Rita's parents are flower children and one can only imagine that Norman's might be a bit more conservative and conventional. It will be really great to see Norman and Rita attempt to navigate the differences and still hold onto each other at the same time. There are a lot of stories and plots to be mined from this angle, while allowing us a chance to learn more about Norman and Rita individually in the process. |
Shane
It's a repeat item that has been on the various lists I've made for previous filming cycles that I'd like to see Shane's illusive mother finally make her grand entrance. I think it's about time Shane got a mentor of her own, she's done such a great job mentoring Rita, but could use someone with a little more life experience to bring her forward. Shane's in a serious relationship that I think we can all agree is headed towards marriage, and despite mom's marriage not working out, I think Shane's mom has much to offer her daughter in terms of advice and guidance. This would definitely be a good season to bring her into the mix.

Renovation Station
A little birdie mentioned that the DLO might undergo some renovations, and I can only imagine one of those changes could be the installation of a new, permanent, work space for Shane---talk about something we need to discuss here on the blog! But it might be nice to see the DLO change in a way that reflects their family as a whole, while still functioning as a work department. Perhaps it could become and eclectic mix of modern and rustic like the Mailbox Grille, while still retaining the lived-in charm we've come to adore in about the DLO. I'll look forward to this new chapter for the POstables being reflected in their environment---whatever form that takes.

Building Blocks
I still haven't forgotten there's a barren plot of land ripe for building in Alexandria, VA. Wouldn't it be neat if Oliver suggested they work on the O'Toole Foundation project together, opening a whole new arena in which to get to know each other? Granted, they work together daily, but how would they handle the construction of something close to both their hearts in a sense that it becomes a unique reflection of the pair in both structure and spirit as a final product? I could definitely see something like that leading to new areas of exploration for the two to get to know each other.
From a symbolic standpoint, the two have finally been set on a solid foundation after Higher Ground. Now it's time to see what they "build" upon that foundation as they decide what their relationship looks like moving forward. You could think of each room of the house being some area of their relationship they need to navigate in everything from what color they choose to paint certain room, to deciding to include a lab in the basement or not. Let your imagination run wild with the possible interpretations.

What I am most excited about, however, was the little voice that whispered in my ear, "What if Oliver proposes once they finish building the house?" Now there is an exciting prospect, one that can start in SSD8 and come to fruition at some point in the long run.
