And So It [Returns]
Way back in the day we discussed Shane and Oliver's long game strategies in their relationship with one another. It was based on the premise that each Shane and Oliver had ways of trying to drop hints of their interest in one another without letting it slip in a pre-Holly (pre-divorce) era.

This analysis completely bypasses the song's dual application as a song from Oliver to Holly, which is also absolutely the case regarding "And So It Goes." But I try to discuss Holly as little as possible nowadays (for obvious reasons).
And So It Goes [For Good]
It seems every few episodes or movies we get a song that re-establishes how ShOliver is viewing their relationship. As a result, that song seemingly "replaces" its predecessor.
In this case, "And So It Goes" is replaced by Peter Katz's "It Was You" in Truth Be Told. No question, as we discussed in Where Are They Now, Part II, that there is a distinct shift in how Oliver is viewing his relationship with Shane. There is no possibility of a "dual application" here. In every way "It Was You" is directed specifically at Oliver's growing feelings for Shane. The Billy Joel ballad is so far in the past at this point I need binoculars to see it. |
Then the question becomes: What song is it? And, perhaps more importantly---what does it mean?!
Stay tuned, POstables!
